Målet med prosjektet er å redusere plastavfall på stranden like ved Tanzania Explorer kontoret i Dar Es Salaam ved å installere et lite plastgjenvinningsverksted basert på Precious Plastics-systemet. Ryddingstiltak for plastavfall er viktig for å ivareta økosystemene både på land og til havs. I tillegg vil lokalsamfunnet kunne dra nytte av innsamling av avfall og salg av produkter, gjennom å skape nye jobbmuligheter og inntektsgenerering.

Relevante utfordringer Dar es Salaam står overfor inkluderer:
- Urbanisering: en stadig økende volumgenerering av plastavfall, samtidig som effektiviteten til avfallshåndteringssystemet synker på grunn av det økende presset, noe som resulterer i ukontrollerte dumpeplasser som fører til ugunstige effekter på folkehelsen og miljøet.
- Økende arbeidsledighetskrise blant unge mennesker i Tanzania.

At NITO's request, Engineers Without Borders Norway has developed the design of a plastic recycling center (container) in Dar es Salaam in collaboration with local project partner Tanzania Explorer.

The goal of the project is to reduce plastic waste on the beach close to the Tanzania Explorer office in Dar Es Salaam by installing a small plastic recycling workshop based on the Precious Plastics system. Clean-up measures for plastic waste are important for safeguarding ecosystems both on land and at sea. In addition, the local community will be able to benefit from waste collection and the sale of products, by creating new job opportunities and income generation.

Relevant challenges facing Dar es Salaam include:  

-Urbanization: a steadily increasing volume generation of plastic waste, while decreasing the efficiency of the waste management system due to the increasing pressures, resulting in uncontrolled dumping grounds leading to adverse effects on public health and the environment.

- Increasing unemployment crisis among youths in Tanzania.

It also described how the machines are safely operated and how to perform maintenance and preservation to ensure that they work with minimum defects and replacement of spare parts.
