I Uganda er ved og trekull de mest brukte metodene for matlaging, som har en lav energiutnyttelse, er helseskadelig og går på bekostning av det biologiske mangfoldet. Det varme klimaet gjør at landsbygda i Uganda kan være et gunstig sted for småskala biogassanlegg, som er både mer effektivt og mindre helseskadelig enn den tradisjonelle fyringen. På Nyenga Foundation har det nylig blitt installert et biogassanlegg som har til hensikt å forsyne skolen med nok biogass til den daglige matlagingen for alle elever og lærere.
Hovedfokuset for masteroppgaven er å undersøke hvor lønnsomt og energieffektivt et biogassanlegg kan være i rurale Uganda, og å se på hvordan teknologien kan implementeres for å sikre lokal aksept, lønnsomhet og miljøgevinster. Muligheter for anlegget og begrensende faktorer er kartlagt for videre analysering i løpet av masterprosessen. Målet er å trekke ut tendenser som kan være til hjelp for flere land som vil implementere biogassteknologien.
Helene og Johannes fikk mye ut av feltoppholdet, og fikk gjennomført alle oppgavene de hadde planlagt. I tillegg brukte de en del tid på opplæring av arbeiderne i bruk av biogass, og hjalp til med å opprette rutiner for videre drift av systemet.
Teamet rakk akkurat å komme hjem til Norge før reiserestriksjonene i forbindelse med Corona-pandemien ble enda strengere, og nå sitter de i karantene i 14 dager. Heldigvis kunnen arbeidet med masteroppgaven fortsette hjemmefra!

In February- March 2020, Meaningful Master student Helene and her mentor Johannes completed their field assignment in Uganda.
In Uganda, wood and charcoal are the most used methods for cooking, which have a low energy utilization, are harmful to health and comprise biodiversity. The warm climate means that rural Uganda can be a favorable location for small-scale biogas plants, which are both more efficient and less harmful to health traditional heating. At the Nyenga Foundation, a biogas plant has recently been installed, which aims to supply the school with enough biogas for the daily cooking for students and teachers.
The focus of the master thesis is to research how profitable and energy efficient a biogas plant can be in rural Uganda, and to look at how the technology can be implemented to ensure local acceptance, profitability and environment benefits. Opportunities for the facility and limiting factors have been mapped for further analysis during the master’s process. The goal is to extract trends that can be of help to more countries that want to implement biogas technology.
Helene and Johannes got a lot out of their field stay and were able to complete all the tasks they had planned. In addition, they spent some time training the workers in the use of biogas and helped establish routines for further operation of the system.
