Midlands Children Hope Project (MCHP) er en organisasjon stiftet i Norge i 2012 for å gi bistand til Midlands Children Hope Center, et barnehjem som også støtter utdanning til gatebarn og gir mikrolån til fattige familier i township Mkoba, Zimbabwe.

Ingeniørene Johanne Schjellungen Ramdal og Nuzat Naima Islam reiste i februar 2020 til Zimbabwe for å gjennomgå eksisterende avfallshåndteringssystemet, foreslå alternative løsninger for å håndtere avfallet og samtidig skape verdi av avfallet for lokalsamfunnet.

I løpet av oppdraget hadde ingeniørene informasjonsmøter med lokale myndigheter, kartla muligheter for å selge sortert plastavfall til små lokale gjenvinningsbedrifter, analyserte avfallsfraksjoner i det lokale deponiet og blant avfallet liggende i nærområdet, i tillegg til å gjennomføre 2 clean-ups med hjelp fra barnehjemsbarna.

Naima og Johanne ble møtt med stor interesse fra lokalsamfunnet, og skapte mye engasjement for prosjektet ved å besøke 6 skoler i Mkoba, der de informerte om alle mulighetene for å skape verdier av avfall ved riktig sortering og gjenvinning, og faren som akkumulering av plast skaper for økosystemet.

Oppdraget førte til svært gode resultater:

• Innsamling av totalt 674 kg plast fra Mkoba og omegn gjennom clean-ups.
• 2.500 lokale elever ble inspirert og informert om verdien som kan skapes med gjenvinning av plast.
• Som umiddelbart gjennomførbar løsning, med hensyn til begrenset tilgang til drivstoff, elektrisitet og vann, er det anbefalt å bruke Ecobricks for å gjenvinne LDPE film og PET flasker. I tillegg kan HDPE, PP, tykk LDPE og PET selges til en lokal gjenvinningsbedrift.
• Med minimale investeringer i fremtiden, er det mulig å sette i gang et lite verksted for produksjon av ulike produkter ved å gjenvinne HDPE, PP og LDPE, ifølge Precious Plastic- modellen.

Midlands Children Hope Project (MCHP) is an organization founded in Norway in 2012 to aid the Midlands Children Hope Center, an orphanage that also supports education for street children and provides microloans to poor families in the township Mkoba, Zimbabwe. 

Engineers Johanne Schjellungen Ramdal and Nuzat Naima Islam travelled to Zimbabwe in February 2020 to review the existing waste management system, propose alternative solutions to manage the waste and at the same time create value from the waste for the local community. 

During the assignment, the engineers had information meetings with local authorities, mapped out opportunities to sell sorted plastic waste to small local recycling companies, analyzed waste fractions in the local landfill and among the waste lying in the local area, in addition to conducting 2 clean-ups with help from the orphanage children. 

Naima and Johanne were met with great interest from the local community and created lot of enthusiasm for the project by visiting 6 schools in Mkoba , where they informed about all the possibilities of creating value from waste by proper sorting and recycling, and the danger that the accumulation of plastic creates for the ecosystem. 

The assignment led to very good results:  

• Collection of 674 kg of plastic from Mkoba and the surrounding area through clean-ups 
• 2,500 local pupils were inspired and informed about the value that can be created by recycling plastic. 
• As an immediately feasible solution, with regard to limited access to fuel, electricity and water, it is recommended to use Ecobricks to recover LDPE film and PET bottles. In addition, HDPE, PP, thick LDPE and PET can be sold to a local recycling company. 
• With minimal investment in the future, it is possible to set up a small workshop to produce various products by recycling HDPE, PP and LDPE
