Mali er et land i Vest-Afrika som står overfor både alvorlige utfordringer med plastavfall og en kontinuerlig økende arbeidsledighet som nå er på over femti prosent. Basert på disse utfordringene ønsker vår samarbeidspartner Strømmestiftelsen å sette opp et plastgjenvinningsanlegg for å produsere skolebenker. Anlegget skal skape arbeidsplasser både under innsamlings- og støpeprosessen.

For å støtte dette arbeidet engasjerte Ingeniører Uten Grenser høsten 2019 et team som samarbeidet for å til å utføre en analyse av prosess og HMS ved et eksisterende plastgjenvinningsanlegg i Burkina Faso. Målet var å finne forslag for å forbedre anleggets prosesser og HMS-tiltak, samt å planlegge hvordan man skal kunne kopiere den eksisterende prosessen og bygge et nytt, tilsvarende plastgjenvinningsanlegg i Mali.

Hovedfunnet fra oppdraget er at prosessen spesielt manglet fokus på arbeidernes sikkerhet. Selv om forslag til forbedringer er blitt identifisert i alle ledd i produksjonsprosessen, understreker IUG-teamet at sikkerheten til arbeiderne er det aspektet som bør få størst fokus fremover.

Planning of plastic recycling plants in Mali with a special focus on HSE. 

Mali is a country in West Africa that faces both serious challenges with plastic waste and a continuously increasing unemployment rate that is now over fifty percent. Based on these challenges, our partner Strømme Foundation wants to set up a plastic recycling plant to produce school benches. The plant will create jobs during both the collection and casting process. 

To support this work, in autumn 2019, Engineers Without Borders engaged a team that collaborated to carry out a process and HMS analysis at an existing plastic recycling plant in Burkina Faso. The goal was to find proposals to improve the plant's processes and HMS measures, as well as to plan how to replicate the existing process and build a new, similar plastic recycling plant in Mali. 

The main finding from the assignment is that the process in particular lacked focus on worker safety. Although suggestions for improvements have been identified at every stage of the production process, the EWB team emphasizes that the safety of workers is the aspect that should get the greatest focus going forward.
