Mitiyana kommune, med en befolkning på rundt 100 000 innbyggere, genererer 15 tonn blandet avfall daglig. Avfallshåndtering er et stort problem i kommunen, uten ordentlige systemer for innsamling. Dårlig håndtering fører til høye forekomster av forsøpling, uhygieniske forhold, blokkerte vannveier og luftforurensning. Det er ingen lokale resirkuleringsinitiativ eller kjøpere av plastavfall i kommunen og Mitiyana-distriktet, og plastavfall som samles inn, selges til kjøpere fra 'Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area'.

Med støtte fra Norges Forhandleres Miljøfond (NREF), har Norges Geotekniske Institutt (NGI), Human Brights og REDS Uganda gått sammen for å implementere SUWASO-prosjektet i Mitiyana for å bedre forholdene. SUWASO-prosjektet ønsker å bygge videre på eksisterende strukturer, og bygge opp et plastprosesseringsanlegg som vil ansette lokale arbeidere til å kutte (shredde) og vaske plast for å øke verdien og senke transportkostnadene før de selges til resirkuleringsselskaper i Kampala. Systemet skal omfatte innsamling, sortering og vask av plastavfallet, hvor avløpsvannet behandles i en separat sedimenteringsstank, samt kutting/shredding av plasten i en enkel plastkvern. Prosjektet vil i en senere fase også se på resirkulering av plast lokalt.

Formålet med oppdraget var å bidra til den praktiske delen av å montere, sette opp og teste maskineri som kreves for å drive plastgjenvinningsanlegget i Mitiyana.

In april 2023 the EWB engineers Ole Herman and Anders completed a field assignment in Kampala and Mityana, Uganda, to build and install machinery to process plastic. The assignment  is part of the larger SUWASO project, which aims to develop sustainable and comprehensive waste management solutions in rural and semi-urban environments.

Mitiyana municipality with a population of about 100,000 people, generates 15 tons of mixed garbage daily with the percentage of plastic not known. Waste management is a very big problem in the municipality with no proper systems for collection or designated collection centres. Poor management posts high incidences of littering, unhygienic conditions, blocked drainages, and air pollution.

There are no recycling initiatives or buyers of plastic waste within the municipality and Mitiyana District. Plastic waste collected is sold to buyers from the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area who are attached to recyclers. 

With support from the Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund (NREF), the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), Human Brights and REDS Uganda have partnered to implement the SUWASO project in Mitiyana to improve the conditions. The SUWASO project wants to build on the existing local conditions and structures, and build up a recycling facility which will employ local workers to shred and wash plastic to increase the value and lower the transportation cost before selling it to recyclers in Kampala. The system include collection, sorting and washing of the plastic waste, where wastewater is treated in a separate water treatment tank, as well as shredding of the plastic in a simple shredder. The project will also look at on site recycling of plastic to new products.

The purpose of the field mission was to construct and test the machines needed to run the plastic recycling facility in Mityana.
