Våren 2025 skrev studentene Priya Selvakumaran og Håkon Kristiansen sin «Master med Mening», godt støttet av IUG-mentor Joakim Gitlestad. I februar gjennomførte de sitt feltarbeid hos Themba Hope Project.
Denne masteroppgaven utvikler en kostnadseffektiv og bærekraftig designløsning for senteret, basert på lokale byggemetoder og funn fra feltarbeid. Løsningen fokuserer på ett av byggene- seminarbygget- og vurderer alternative takkonstruksjoner i tre og stål, med vekt på teknisk gjennomførbarhet, økonomi og fleksibilitet. Målet er å legge grunnlaget for et varig samfunnssenter som kan vokse i takt med lokalsamfunnets behov og ressurser.
Kort om Themba Hope Project
Themba Hope Project er en non-profit veldedighetsorganisasjon drevet av frivillige. De jobber for å gi barn og unge i Zimbabwe utdanning, og for å støtte det har de iverksatt en rekke tiltak. De har bygd opp et bærekraftig barnehjem til tidligere gatebarn, jobber forebyggende i lokalsamfunnet for å hindre at antall gatebarn øker, gir støtte til sårbare familier, og planlegger nå bygging av et samfunnssenter. Ved å investere i mennesker bygger de lokalsamfunnet.

Meaningful Master’s: Design of a Community Center in Zimbabwe
Local communities in Zimbabwe face major challenges related to education, health, and vocational training. Themba Hope Project is therefore planning to build a community center in Mkoba, Gweru, to support these needs.
In the spring of 2025, students Priya Selvakumaran and Håkon Kristiansen wrote their “Master with Meaning,” well supported by IUG mentor Joakim Gitlestad. In February, they carried out their fieldwork with Themba Hope Project.
This master’s thesis develops a cost-effective and sustainable design solution for the center, based on local building methods and findings from the fieldwork. The solution focuses on one of the buildings—the seminar building—and evaluates alternative roof constructions in wood and steel, with emphasis on technical feasibility, economy, and flexibility. The goal is to lay the foundation for a lasting community center that can grow in line with the local community’s needs and resources.
About Themba Hope Project
Themba Hope Project is a non-profit charity organization run by volunteers. They work to provide education for children and young people in Zimbabwe, and to support this they have initiated a number of efforts. They have built a sustainable orphanage for former street children, work preventively in the local community to reduce the number of street children, provide support to vulnerable families, and are now planning the construction of a community center. By investing in people, they are building the local community.
