I april 2025 dro Master med Mening-student Joar Dale Landa, og IUG-mentor Katrine Osgjerd Garnæs på felttur til Albania for å samle data om BRIGHT Products sine Solar Home Systems (SHS). I samarbeid med BRIGHT Products, Norsk Nødhjelp og The Door Albania ble flere installasjoner besøkt, og brukere ble intervjuet for å se hvordan systemene fungerer i praksis.
Studien undersøkte de økonomiske og sosiale effektene av SHS i Albania, et land med høy strømnettsdekning. Resultatene viser at systemene gir begrensede økonomiske fordeler på grunn av høye startkostnader, men store sosiale gevinster. SHS verdsettes høyt under strømbrudd, gir et tryggere alternativ til ustabile eller ulovlige strømtilkoblinger, og øker bevisstheten om solenergi.
Selv i områder med eksisterende strømnett kan SHS styrke robusthet, forbedre hverdagen og bidra til sosialt samhold – og dermed bli et viktig verktøy for humanitære og utviklingsprosjekter.

Meaningful Masters: Social and Economic Impact of Solar Home Systems
In April 2025, Meaningful Masters student Joar Dale Landa and EWB-mentor Katrine Osgjerd Garnæs traveled to Albania to collect data on BRIGHT Products’ Solar Home Systems (SHS). In collaboration with BRIGHT Products, Norwegian People’s Aid, and The Door Albania, several installations were visited, and users were interviewed to see how the systems work in practice.
The study examined the economic and social effects of SHS in Albania, a country with high grid coverage. The results show that while the systems provide limited economic benefits due to high upfront costs, they generate significant social value. SHS are highly appreciated during power outages, provide a safer alternative to unstable or illegal grid connections, and increase awareness of solar energy.
Even in areas with existing grid access, SHS can strengthen resilience, improve daily life, and contribute to social cohesion – making them an important tool for humanitarian and development projects.
