Våren 2026 skrev Mathilde M. Erdahl Korsmo og Cecilie Furfjord Pettersen sin Master med Mening (MmM) i samarbeid med IUG og Themba Hope Project. Med god støtte fra sin mentor, Fredrik S. Dalen, reiste de til Zimbabwe for å bli kjent med Themba Hope Project og gjennomføre sitt feltarbeid.
Basert på MmM-oppgaven fra våren 2025, var målet med oppgaven å komme nærmere realiseringen av et samfunnssenter for Themba Hope Project, i Mkoba, Zimbabwe. I løpet av feltarbeidet inspiserte de tomten, gjorde oppmålinger, besøkte Thembas øvrige fasiliteter, observerte aktive byggeplasser og hadde møter med entreprenører, leverandører og andre interessenter i byggebransjen.
Oppgaven har videreutviklet den konstruksjonsmessige utformingen av seminarbygget, og omfatter oppdaterte tegninger, kostnadsoverslag og informasjon om lokal byggeskikk. Dette gir et solid teknisk grunnlag for Themba og det videre arbeidet med prosjektet; engasjere lokale ingeniører og entreprenører samt styrke arbeidet med finansiering av dette flotte senteret.

Themba Hope Project er en frivilligdrevet ideell organisasjon med 30 års erfaring fra Zimbabwe. De støtter barn, unge og familier i sårbare situasjoner gjennom blant annet barnehjem, skolegang, dagsenter, mikrolån og entreprenørskapsopplæring.

About the assignment
In spring 2026, Mathilde M. Erdahl Korsmo and Cecilie Furfjord Pettersen wrote their Meaningful Master’s (MmM) thesis in collaboration with EWB-N and Themba Hope Project. With support from their mentor, Fredrik S. Dalen, they travelled to Zimbabwe to get to know Themba Hope Project and conduct their fieldwork.
Building on the MmM thesis from spring 2025, the aim of the project was to come closer to realizing a community centre for Themba Hope Project in Mkoba, Zimbabwe. During their fieldwork, they surveyed and measured the site, visited Themba’s other facilities, observed active construction sites, and met with contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders in the construction industry.
The thesis further developed the structural design of the seminar building and includes updated drawings, cost estimates, and information on local building practices. This provides a solid technical foundation for Themba to move forward with the project by engaging local engineers and contractors.

Themba Hope Project is a volunteer-run non-profit organization with 30 years of experience in Zimbabwe. They support children, young people, and families in vulnerable situations through initiatives including a children’s home, education, a day centre, microloans, and entrepreneurship training.
